| the crank sproket line up with the dimples on the backing plate when #1 piston is at TDC of compression stroke. They will line up every other revolution of the crank if belt was installed correct with piston #1 at TDC of the compression stroke per FSM. On 4 stroke engines the crank rpm is 2x the cams rpm. See picture here of line up dots: [ http://300zx-twinturbo.com/cgi-bin/manual.cgi?list=em&dir=&config=&refresh=&direction=forward&scale=0&cycle=off&slide=17&design=default&total=70 ] The marks on the belt are only for first install to get the teeth between cam and crank sprockets correct. Even at that the teeth should be counted as noted in the FSM to be sure. It takes hundreds of revolutions to have the belt marks line up again. The dots line up as noted are the most important to have engine in correct cam and crank timing. The engine is usually rotated CW and CCW 120 degrees to set the belt and the tensioner then recheck the tension and the position of the tensioner tighten bolt.
